 I have had no trouble with a USR COURIER.

PS> Whatever I get *needs* to be able to handle some rather suspect line

 Save ya self some time and maybe money and try and get a 'TEST' unit
of each modem so you can take it home and try the connections out. What works
fine on my (dirty) Lines may not work on yours.
