I know a fellow who used to stress that very thing with me. He's say, "Don't
waste the stereo equipment... even in the studio on the playback monitor for
the final mix. If you do, you won't get a good clear mix... cause those
folks who don't have $1000 stereos in their homes or cars won't hear the
stuff. Play it back on as cheap a radio as you can find and THEN, when you
hear it all, you'll have a good mix! Until then, it'll only be a mediocre
mix, at best!"
I've tried to keep that in mind... cause the studio I have been using of late
has EV's for the speakers for the monitor system (Owner thinks bigger is
better -)... So I bring my rough mixes home and listen on a cheap
system then take notes at each spot that needs correcting... then I go back
to the studio and fix it right! (Lots of back tracking but it keeps
everyone happy!)
