Try adding S27=48 (disable V.42 detect phase) to your dialling string, or try disabling the 3429 symbol rate (use ATS$ to find out which S-register controls this function, as the newer Sportsters have had their registers remapped). If neither of those works, you may have to use &Nn to restrict the initial link rate to something less than 28k8bps. Good luck.
