Subject: Churches unite to denounce war on Iraq From: Otis Willie Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 00:59:36 GMT Churches unite to denounce war on Iraq (EXCERPT) By Philip Webster and Ruth Gledhill AMERICA and Britain are given a sombre warning today against drifting into war with Iraq without clear evidence that President Saddam Hussein is still making chemical and biological weapons. With church leaders uniting on Christmas Day to urge the two Governments to pull back from war, President Bush and Tony Blair are told that pressing on without proof would risk loss of world support, impose unbearable strains on Arab governments and increase terrorism. Charles Kennedy, leader of the Liberal Democrats, calls in a letter to The Times for a blanket search by weapons experts to determine whether Saddam has disarmed u in which case war would be avoided u or discover firm evidence that he is constructing and deploying weapons of mass destruction. Mr KennedyAEs letter, supported, By senior colleagues including Baroness Williams of Crosby, is an indication of growing political concern that the prospect of imminent conflict appears to be hardening, even though the weapons inspectors have so far failed to uncover incriminating evidence. It will also raise the Liberal DemocratsAE profile as the party most sceptical of the GovernmentAEs stance on the war. At the same time, the leaders of both the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches issued appeals for caution. The incoming Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, recalled the story of the Wise Men as he mocked strategists who end up creating oyet more havoc and sufferingoe in spite of their intimate knowledge...
