oh great! psycho-babble horticulture! i suppose this same agronomist also 
suggested that plants that would not produce chose not to produce because 
they had some serious "attachment issues" and couldn't stand the thought of 
being separated from their fruit. }8)
personally, i have always thought it a bad idea to attribute emotions to 
plants.

Have you been fertilizing them?  It's very important for barrel 
tomatoes as they use up the nutrients very quickly.  I expect that you
