To continue, I found the "Online User Reference Guide" both on the disk that
came with the modem and on Hayes ftp site.
The problem is that it only covers the 14.4 and 33.6 modems.
And it does not cover all the S registers nor the AT commands.
And some of the ones covered don't take.
For example, AT&Q9 returns an ERROR message.
WHat I am looking for is a ref guide that will cover the 56K modem.
The online guide sent with the modem does not do that.
