Not to disagree with your point,  there,  but I read someplace that it was a 
genetic influence on a characteristic that only manifested itself in certain 
cicrumstances...
I believe the example gave high population density as being one of the 
triggering factors.
Can't remember where the heck I read that,  though,  offhand.
