subject: New release of netscape2

JP>Responding to James McKenzie:
JM> On Friday 27 June, 1997, IBM and Netscape released a new version of NS/2.
  > ... It may be obtained ... at IBM's FTP site (ftp://service2.boulder.ibm
  > .com/software/netscape). The file sizes are definately different.
JP>Just downloaded the file dated 27 Jun 97 and found the contents identical
to
JP>what I downloaded two or three months ago. I think the 27 Jun date is
ust
JP>an artifact of some housekeeping activity, but certainly not a new
rsion.
JP>It would be very strange for Netscape or IBM to issue an update without
JP>changing the labeling.
This is the second time that they have done it. If you downloaded one just
two months ago then it was also different from the original release without
a notice of any kind. I don't know what you received but the file sizes
were slightly different for me. I already deleted the old one so I can't
give you a side by side comparison but this is what is in the new

You should keep in mind that it is not always necessary for a file size to
change to be different. Just changing bytes in an array somewhere and
recompiling may fix a bug without the file size changing. Only a binary
compare of old and new will point out the truth. I would assume that this
fixes the security bug discovered on the windows version at a minimum. That
would probably be something they would not want to broadcast considering the
CNN and trade press flack over it.
