subject: The Blame Game

MG> MG>> J'accuse: the blaming begins
MG> MG>> Chr‚tien government knew of 'criminal' acts, Martin official says

MG> DP> Wow. Can you say "implosion"?
MG> DP> The writing's on the wall. Lorie Goldstein (Tor Sun) had it right:
MG> DP> this goes beyond partisonship. Doesn't matter if the party
is Liberal or
MG> DP> Conservative: once they've been there for two terms, the
rot starts to
MG> DP> set in and the old adage about power corrupting becomes visible. In
MG> DP> this case we're talking three terms.

MG> Everyone knew Chr‚tien's government was corrupt. It's why all the rats jumped
MG> ship when Martin took over, and it's the whole reason why Martin resigned from
MG> cabinet. That fact is the only thing that even gives him the slimmest hope of
MG> carrying on.

I was unaware this is why Martin resigned. I thought it was because
Chretien was curtailing him too much in his quest to further his career.
At any rate yes - everyone knew the Chretien government was corrupt, just
as they knew that Mulroney's was as well. Two parties too long in
power.

MG> It's my opinion that the Mulroney government was just as corrupt as Chr‚tien's
MG> government was; the only difference is that they just did a better job of
MG> covering their tracks. The Chr‚tien gang is a victim of their own arrogance;
MG> they thought they'd never be held accountable for their actions.

Arrogance - that's the word I was looking for.

MG> DP> I'm of the belief that if Martin
MG> DP> calls for a spring election he will lose and lose big.

MG> Although he's not saying anything right now, I'm pretty sure that we will not
MG> have a spring election now. Martin will wait until the inquiry has run it's
MG> course; he will want to be exonerated by it before he goes to the polls. His

I wish that were true. Unfortunately, he's making election noises
still, and has advised his cabinet to shut their mouths about the scandal in
preparation for an election. (Forget the exact words)

MG> own exoneration may not be enough if some of his choices for cabinet ministers
MG> have dirt on their hands, though. That's probably the reason for all
the strict
MG> backgrounmd checks that Martin had done on his choices for cabinet ministers.
MG> He knew the shit was gonna hit the fan, and he wanted his cabinet to be as
MG> squeaky-clean as possible.

MG> It looks bad for the Liberals, but personally, I have absolutely no confidence
MG> that the Tories will be any better. They're all fat
"cats", after all. Only the
MG> stripes are different.

Couldn't agree with you more. As leftist as I am, though, I have no
confidence that the NDP wouldn't put us in the poorhouse.
