*reply to reference how how children learn to read.
All children are different. Reading for my 8 year old didn't click until
the middle of 1st grade. He is slow at comprehension, but doesn't read
too bad. In homeschooling we usually go only as fast as the child can.
You can use reading words for spelling words and you can give her a word
and have them find the same word in that chapter. Count how many times
that word is used. Reading to them is good, but they must do reading too.
This is how they will practice these words and find their meanings. You
can read it and have them read it back. Look for problem areas. If you
see a continuous problem, have her independenly tested if possible for
any learning problems. Or go to the library and find a book dealing with
learning problems for reading. I am not saying they have this, but if you
are uncomfortable with their progress maybe you need to look into this.
Children this age work better hands on and it it not so much that it is
important to read as much as reading for understanding. If your state
requires standardize testing as a requirement for homeschooling than I
would look into having her testing for a problem. That way you will be
better protected and they can give you advice on their peticular problem
in teaching them.
