Sounds good.
DH> P> What is your current initialization string?

Hmm. Not so good. Try the following instead:
at&f2eov1s0=6s7=45+FAA=2
DH> P> How many rings before FaxTalk is set to answer?

If you are listening in, the modem may not hear the fax CNG tones.
You'll need to stay off of the phone. Also, try leaving a short 1
second (or so) gap on the beginning of your outgoing answering machine
message.
Also, be sure that the modem and answering machine are connected/wired
as described in your manual.
Incase I have not sent this, here is further information on this
subject:
WHAT IS SILENT ANSWER? HOW DO I USE IT?
Silent Answer allows your SupraFAXModem or SupraSonic to "listen in" on
an incoming phone call and determine whether or not the incoming call is
a voice call or a fax call. If a fax call is detected, the fax software
can then receive the fax; if a voice call is detected the call is
allowed to continue with the answering device (answering machine or
telephone).
Required components for using Silent Answer are:
1. Fax Software that currently supports a Silent Answer mode:
Windows: WinFax Pro 2.0 or higher, WinFax LITE, FaxTalk+
DOS: FaxTalk Plus 1.65c or higher (Class 1 mode)
2. Answering device:
Any answering machine that stops playing its message when a phone on the
same line is taken off-hook should work. If you have an answering
machine that does not stop playing its message when a phone on the same
line is taken off-hook, you will need to purchase an adapter that adds
that capability. (Radio Shack sells such a part under the number 43-107
for about $9.99. It is called a "Teleprotector" by Radio Shack.) The
"Teleprotector" should be used between the modular phone jack (wall),
and the answering machine.
You can also answer incoming calls with a telephone, then assume the
role of the answering machine. This means you will need to hang-up when
your modem responds to the incoming fax.
Silent Answer will not work with electronic voice mail.
3. SupraSonic, SupraFAXModem V.32, V.32bis, 144i, 144PB, 144LC, 288, or
288i: These modems provide support for Silent Answer. The 144LC modem
will only allow Silent Answer with fax software using Class 1 fax
commands.
4. Add the following to your initialization string:
+FAE = 3 For Class 1
+FAA = 2 For Class 2
