First off, check the firewall on both sides.  A block on either side 
will kill it.

I haven't tried it this way but, since Win9x doesn't use usernames by 
default, only share-level passwords, make sure Samba is set for 
share-level authentication.

I think virtually everything uses encrypted passwords now (as long as 
the OS has been updated).

I think that's normal but don't have experience with it.

Since the homes share are unique to the user, you'll have to enable them 
as world readable (I think you can do this in Samba and not change file 
system permissions).

If you can access everything as guest/smbguest, it's a username thang. 
I don't know if there's something that can be added to Win9x to pass 
that along.  Or maybe it's just been far too long since I even thought 
about such stuff, not to mention use Win9x...
