I posted the above with the hope that someone would mention the Balkans.

Let's compare:

1. The U.S. had the full mandate from Nato for Bosnia/Kosovo. It didn't for Iraq.
2. The total number of US troops in Bosnia/Kosovo has never exceeded
20,000. Last I heard, there were 150,00 US troops in Iraq, and there might
possibly be more.
3. Over the 7 years that the US had substantial troops there, there were
fewer than 100 deaths resulting from operations. In Iraq, we have suffered
more than 2000 operational deaths among our troops. 4. The overwhelming
majority of troops in Bosnia/Kosovo never fired a shot, because the Balkans
was a peacekeeping mission. That cannot be said of Iraq.

And we at least had *some* plan for leaving the Balkans.
