Hi Jasen,
    Mirabile dictu! I have msdev working on the desktop. It is mainly C++,
but will accept C code it you twist its arm.
I stripped out everything that wasn't essential, and have just compiled
"Hello World" for Windows, and run it, so it'll do.

    Configured the mobile phone yesterday to work with the laptop. Took
most of the day to find out how, and some fiddling with the drivers, but
the laptop shows the phone modem should receive at 43220 and transmit at
14400 BPS. Well the proof of the pudding .... connected it up by infrared,
and lo and behold - still connecting at 9600 Baud. Maybe this is a good
time to give up. :-)
