| subject: | Problems w/samba server |
I recently upgraded my linux box, and now WinME (and 98 and OS/2) can no longer access the password-protected shares on the linux box. Something with the new version of Samba, I think. I thought I would crosspost this here and see if anyone knew of a fix on the Windows side. In particular, how do I tell ME & 98 to use the logged-on user's name, instead of trying to use "guest" (or no userid at all)? XP seems to work fine, and uses the username to access the samba/linux box shares. *** | Which "Win9x" are you using? I'm not sure if Win95 or OS/2 support encrypted | passwords, so you can try disabling it on Samba (encrypt passwords = no). You | will probably also have to reset the passwords with smbpasswd and then enable | plaintext passwords on XP since it's disabled by default: +-[SL=>MP] Windows ME. I believe I tried turning encrypted passwords off in samba, but I didn't do the password reset so I may try it again. I am pretty sure that ME using encrypted passwords by default, though. Also, I had SWAT opened up, and noticed that XP was logging on with the user name, while ME appeared to be trying to log on using the smbguest name. I log onto both with a user name, so I thought that was odd. The OS/2 machine can't even list the shares, so it never showed up on SWAT. | You may also have share level security enabled, you should set it to user | level (security = user). +-[SL=>MP 04-14-09] If I set it to user level, the WinME box cannot access the samba server at all, much like the OS/2 box can't. With it set to share level, the WinMe box can at least access some of the shares (but not the "homes" share).
