It was just a thought on the off chance.

I'd have to agree with them that it's your computer and not the modem
causing the problem.

Sounds like they were easy enough to deal with seeing as they offered
a refund. Problems like this are almost impossible to diagnose over
the phone as every computer/software combo is different, it was
CTL3D.DLL you were getting the error in wasn't it.

As unpalatable as it sounds have you thought about re-installing
windows from scratch again or just using different comms software.

PS When you reply to messages if you could leave parts of the
original message in your reply as it makes remembering what the
conversation was about a bit easier, It took me a few moments to
remember what it was all about, the STACKS bit made the penny drop in
the end.
