you can run linux for free dos/win compatibility.  you use dosemu and a 
windows emulator that i cant remember the name.  there is also executor, a 
mac emulator.  i'm not saying that linux does a good job of emulating, only 
certain programs may work.

microsoft is not that big of a company.  the only have 30,000 employees, and 
make 12 billion a year.  that's pale in comparison to ibm, which has 150,000 
employees and makes 76 billion a year!  gates stands out due to the fact that 
his dos/win rules the OS market, and that he owns a good share of the company 
himself.
