Here's the trick I use when I balance the prop. I sand the finish off and
try not to take any wood. Granted if one takes finish one is bound to take
wood too but you know what I mean. Then I smooth all the edges making sure
the leading edge of the blade is nice and round like a wing, not sharp.
Then I check the balance again. More often then not I find the balance
problem with wood props is the finish. Too much ends up on one side or one
tip or whatever. Once I remove the finish most of my wood ones balance as
is. Of course the bare wood can't be used so it has to be finished in some
way. I use a spay can of clear Poly-U from the hardware store. I stick a
scrap piece of balsa through the hole to serve as a handle and I spray on a
light coat to start. I use the balsa handle to hold the prop flat, front
side up while drying. Once dry I check the balance again and try to add a
little extra to the light side on the second coat. Three or four medium
coats does it and when balanced it runs so much better. Perhaps I should do
up a bunch and bring them to Camden with me. Might pay for my trip that
way! :)
