Several of my BBS users have asked me a question concerning McAfee's virus
scanning program which I cannot answer, and I am hoping someone here can. It
concerns the updated data file releases that they produce (DAT-xxxx.ZIP) and
their compatibility with McAfee's various Scan engines.
I am aware from reading the docs that the DAT-xxxx data files can be used to
update the DOS scanning engine (usually archived as SCN-xxxx.ZIP), but what I
cannot tell is if these same data files can be used to update any of their
other scan engines (recent versions, of cours), in particular the BootShield
program, the Windows 3.x engine, the Windows '95 engine, the OS/2 engine, or
any of their other antivirus scanning engines that work on the IBM PC.
I like to offer my users a reasonably updated set of AV tools, yet I simply
don't have the time or the resources to call their BBS and download each and
every product once a month, and I don't have internet access at this time. I
can handle the DAT-xxxx files, but I can't tell if that's doing much good.
Can some one tell me if McAfee's data files will work with their other scan
engines?
The McAfee antivirus line, BTW, is NOT my only selection, but it is the only
one where this question has arisen.
Oh yes, one more question... are there any virii floating around that can
adversely affect an Amiga computer (based on the Motorola MC68000 series
CPU), and are there any antivirus toolkits available for such machines? I
have several Amiga users on my BBS, but I can find no evidence of such
software available for them.
