One of the better Star Trek/Star Wars crossovers I've read is Collin Yeoh's
DARKNESS BEYOND. Picard and the Enterprise investigate a wormhole, and a
Star Destroyer comes through. There's a strong Troi subplot, too.
Overall, I thought it worked very well.

But, yes, with most of the ST/SW crossovers I've read, they read like an
excuse to show why one is better than the other, and oftentimes characters
become little more than stand-ins for the author's biases.

I admit I've long been tempted to write a ST/SW crossover story. I have
less a plot than vague notions. I think there are some real tactical
differences between the ships of the two universes.

Doctor Who seems to be the universal solvent. It works with
-anything-.

Well, I think the writer could rationalize the Hellmouth into Treknobabble
terms, but at the expense of losing the mystical qualities of Buffy.

Here's an example. A friend of mine and I worked out scientific
rationalizations for Narnia one day. Pressure dome here. Wormholes there.
That sort of thing. He e-mailed me a while later and wondered if I minded
if he used the rationalizations; he wanted to write a Trek story where Kirk
and the Enterprise discover the Narnia spacehab. In principle, I had no
objections--I was planning something oddly similar with Daleks--but I said,
"You can use all the scientific jiggery-pokery you want, but the more
you use, the less Lewis' Narnia it will be."

In other words, if the two universes are -too- dissimilar, the more you try
to explain one in terms of the other, the more you lose the qualities that
made you want to explore that universe in the first place.

For a few thrilling, mad, exultant years I lived and breathed
Sherlock Holmes to the exclusion of all other lives and oxygens. I could
recite huge passages of the text, remember dates, details, names and
incidents as if I had actually been by the Great Detective's side
during each adventure. Which of course, I had, for Watson had taken me
there.
