subject: margin numbers

Here's one to chew on. Some colleagues are translating a German work, a
famous philosophical text with a standard critical edition in German. They
need to have the page numbers of the German text in the margin next to the
line where the translation hits the new page. Is there a way to do this so
that the margin numbers will stay in place despite revisions in the text
which might cause the text to expand and contract? Right now they've got two
columns and are having to eyeball the page number position every time they
revise.
