If I were forced to earn my crust performing such a drab task, I
suspect I too would make a habit of inspecting novel items to
alleviate the monotony...

Yeah... It might even do less good. Statistically, the more people who
are involved in 'securing' aircraft, the more vulnerable to attack the
system becomes... A corollary then is that with less security, flying
becomes cheaper, more people fly, and the chances of any individual
meeting their end goes down :-)

I find it staggering that anyone would consider the "illusion of
safety" to have any value, sans the PR reps of airlines, and perhaps
the odd insurance company...
