There is such a program. You have probably heard of it on TV by now. It
initilized the modem with M0 as to silence the speaker. It then dialed
the phone number to "moldavia". It stayed connected until the modem was
hung up (usually by a power off). The FCC is investigating if the calls
ever actually went to Moldavia (they think they might have just gone to
KY and the user was billed for a Moldavia call).
As far as your modem staying connected... it certainlly can. A program
can be shut down and if the ATH command is not issued it DOES stay
connected. Try it... crash your terminal program and your modem will
still be connected until you shut down or issue the ATH command.
