| subject: | New Modem... |
Hi Bill, PS>After the untimly death of my beloved Supra 28.8k V.FC, I am in the PS>market for a new modem for my BBS. The modems that I am looking PS>at are (but not limited to :) PS> USR Courier (33.6k) BG>The pick of the bunch IMO. Handles all V.n protocols plus HST, and has BG>the major advantage of flash-ROM upgradeability. Can be had for ~$500 BG>now too. And what I went with, Under $500, yep, paid $439 for it (northcote computers) Not a 'SysOp Deal'. Modem Connection would not tell me a SysOp price, tho the dealer price was $435 inc tax.... PS> Dynalink (33.6k) BG>Too flaky for BBS use, especially with its broken BTLZ compression. BG>Presumably you know that these are only available as internal modems ? One of the other reasons I did not go for the Dynalink (no free slots left :) PS> Currently have a borrowed Avtech MegaPlus Fax V.34, but it seem that PS> it does not like connecting to a few of my regular connections :( PS> (Which, I might add, the Supra help a good, solid 28.8k) BG>I doubt that any modem will give 100% interconnectivity. With 2 of the local calls I make, the Avtech would not connect at all to one of them, and the other was a hit and miss, if it did connect it was usually at 14.4k, on the other hand, the Supra would connect at 28.8k every time...... I liked my supra, it was small, it showed the connect speed on the little led read-out, it sat on my desk and accepted thousands of calls, and made hundreds of calls, I have it in the drawer at the moment, hopefull that I can get it repaired (locally). Yep, good, solid, reliable little modem it was (the USR is about 2.5 times the size of lil supra :) PS> Whatever I get *needs* to be able to handle some rather suspect line PS> conditions (to/from Europe mainly) BG>My Courier works extremely well with ISD calls to the USA, but I can't BG>comment on Europe at all, as I've never had occasion to call there. Just got a call from Sweeden, he normally connects to the maestro at 4.8k - 7.2k, hit the USR at 14.4k (he has a USR as well) cya later, Paul. ... Stupidity is NOT a handicap. You'll have to park elsewhere. --- Ezycom V1.48b2 00f90034* Origin: Dark Crystal +61-3-9761-8371, +61-3-9761-8372 (3:639/104) SEEN-BY: 50/99 620/243 621/525 623/630 624/300 625/100 632/107 329 348 360 SEEN-BY: 633/371 634/388 396 635/301 402 502 503 506 541 544 639/102 104 110 SEEN-BY: 639/161 251 252 254 300 711/401 409 410 413 430 808 809 899 932 934 SEEN-BY: 712/515 713/888 714/906 800/1 @PATH: 639/104 252 635/503 50/99 711/808 934 |
