CB> MS>I'll ask the question that Shanker doesn't want to hear: why
CB> MS>_should_
CB> MS>businesses care about HS achievement?
CB>
CB> Fair question, but I'm going to begin by answering with questions of
CB> my
CB> own. If they _shouldn't_ care (as you suggest), then why _do_ they
CB> care?
I'm suggesting that businesses are conning educators and parents by
pretending to care.
After all, how many Fortune 500 companies spend a fortune on "public
relations" at the same time they close factories here and move production
overseas?
CB> workplace? Why are there frequent vocal complaints by business
CB> leaders
CB> that those they hire can't read and do math? And yet, why do these
CB> business leaders continue to hire students without checking their
CB> high
CB> school transcripts to see what kind of grades they got in English and
CB> math?
Because the Fortune 500's "concern" about K-12 education is just their
latest public relations gimmick.
CB> And yet business leaders attended the education summit in New Jersey
CB> last spring in droves and voiced their concerns over the quality of
CB> the
CB> education of those graduating from our high schools.
A good photo op.
