Over the past decades, as it appears to me, the educational system has
somewhat floundered in it's responsibility to the students. It is apparent
that in the area of American and World history programs the educational
system had and continues to hold back, when dealing with the facts.
Teaching is suppose to stimulate the mind of students as it provides them
with the tools by which to acurately determine their own stand and approach
to a given event. How can the student accurately evaluate historical events
if the balance of facts is intentionally slanted?
Such is the case when covering the relationship between the First Nations
(Indians) and how inaccurately historians have portrayed them and the events.
It is safe, by virtue of the facts to say that the children have been grossly
misled and, that cultures have been labeled, based on greed and power
grabbing injustices.
While the cases involving the First Nations are numerous and, include
matter directly associated with genocide, forced assimilation, abuse,
slavery, and so on.....it is also a matter of fact that the U.S. government
was not the leader in Human Rights isssues it so proudly proclaims. Point is
that we do not make it a point to teach our children that there weaknesses in
human nature which need to be addressed formally and truthfully. Classroom
debate over historical issues, dealing with all the facts is dealing with the
reality that we as adults demand....why then must children be eliminated from
the same criteria?
It also seems that as the educational system remains stagnated in this area
of developement, the children are bombarded with misinformation. History
portrays European and American eras as being filled with great humanitarian
deeds and, suppresses the atrosities and errors in judgement. Are our
children going to be left to sort out the reality and mend the wounds while
the educational system continues to support the current approach.
It is true that strides have been made in cultural recognition, yet how
much do we delve into these cultures, regionally, nationally. We instead deal
with the concept of "Melting Pots" and ignore heritages and cultural
diversity...something everyone is proud of....especially those who now pay
the price for oppression, based on their heritage in the way of poverty,
segregation and physical attack. No, the incidents of 1962 Selma, Alabama are
not neatly hidden away...they continue. Due to children evolving with the
concepts that ignorance, superstition and fear have generated...conditioned
minds of lies and misinformation allow for future societies to continue the
trends which, are setrimental to survival of cultures.
