subject: Master of weird thoughts

I've seen the cool 'Bike computers' in bike stores, and the lesser
models at the places I actually can afford, like the cheezy 'toy stores'
and department stores. Now, I've come up with two thoughts- the talking
kiddee bike computer seems like it would be going relatively cheap soon,
though I may be wrong, and all I'm interested in is a speedometer and
odometer. Is is a viable, if cheezy, alternative? Also, I was
examining our broken down skiing machine, and it's computer uses a very
similar setup- a magnet of some sort, and a sensor. Now, the magnet was
attached to the side of the plastic and metal flywheel, which wouldn't
be feasible on a bike with caliper brakes.. I was thinking, if I
attached the magnet safely with double-stick tape inside my rim, and by
some magical occurence found a place to situate the sensor to read that,
I would have a very cheap alternative that does what I want- tells me
how far and how fast I've gone. Now, I know this is undoubtedly
cheezy, but it seems like one of those nice, cheap ideas that get
someone like me going without the expenditure of cash, like using
aquarium tubing to make an extension on your water bottle so you can
drink without taking your eyes off the road... What I'm wondering is
(and I know this might have safety, etc, considerations, but I'm willing
to find a workaround for them if it saves me $50, which I don't have)
how the real bike computers arrange the sensor and trigger. Do they
mount on the front or rear wheel? both seem to have their advantages,
and I'm unsure about which would be better. Also, where do THEY put the
magnet or whatever it is that tells it the wheel has revolved? On the
inner part of the rim (facing the axle) or inside, where the inner tube,
etc, must reside (I admit that I've never actually been behind my
tires- they haven't given me trouble yet, though I'm sure they will
soon :/)...
