I don't have the figures to hand, but it is well known that the greatest
number of species of living things, and the greatest amount of living
material on the earth is around the size of bacteria. The things that we
see (like plants with complex reproduction strategies) are actually rare,
and humans are rarer still.

The male/female issue is particularly interesting, and there are some great
ideas, but no knock-out "that must be the explanation" theories.
