This northerner neither forgets nor feels the least bit triumphant about
our own civil war, which was a tragedy all around.

And at that, we were "lucky" -- I think we tend to underestimate
how much the civil wars in Russia 1918-1922 and China 1937-1949 contributed
to the nature of the regimes that emerged from them. Communist "class
struggle" would have been a lousy starting point in any case, but the
civil wars (and attending disease, famine, foreign interventions, etc.)
made it even harsher and bloodier.
