    I've not looked at RFC821 but I imagine that they give an implementation
    independant look at the process. I also imagine that you have to use
    good old socket level programming with a defined port. If you where to
    do your own mail, you'd have to make sure that there is not a daemon
    already using the pre-defined port.
    I've done some sockect level programming and help a little bit in that
    area; otherwise, I'm really no help whatsoever [g].
