The whole neocon-9/11 complex that works itself into a froth bashing the UN, France, "old Europe" in general, the ungrateful WWII allies whose chestnuts we pulled from the fire, etc., is peculiar. It seems to be rooted in a belief that we're always better off going it alone than having to deal with allies who don't back us 110% every time on every issue. It might make more sense if it were part of a consistent isolationism (we're Fortress America, screw up your own continents but don't mess with us), or if it were part of a consistent imperialism (we've got the muscle and will to send forth our armies until no potential threats remain anywhere). But since either one would be economic suicide, and neither one is remotely likely to get sustained domestic support, they just keep on striking their poses. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
