MS>Many colleges are so hard up for students they will take anyone, and
MS>they simply cannot realistically be expected to voluntarily go broke
MS>(faster) by getting tough on admissions to help public schools "motivate"
MS>kids.
Then they have zero right to complain about the level of
competence of the kids. They're contributing to the problem.
MS>The government, though, contributes greatly to this problem by giving
MS>the same financial aid regardless of high school class rank or SAT
MS>score.
I'll buy this... to a point. While it would reward
accomplishment, it would also be putting more money into
the hands of many who need it least. A lot like your
position on affluent retirees. Well-to-do, 2-parent,
educated families with homes in the suburbs will have an
advantage going in, will do better proportionately, and
will garner more of the financial aid (though needing it
less than some others).... There'd have to be some middle
ground on this issue for me to go along...
