All my BBS related programs run in VMs (using VMWare workstation 6.5). One of them uses eComstation 2.0 using the JFS. I could never get eCS to run in a VM using anything but JFS as the file system. The other VM runs Windows XP for my mailer (D'Bridge/BinkD and mailtossing). The BBS nodes and data now reside on the eCS VM. I'm using the Ray Gwinn SIO/Vmodem drivers on the eCS VM for inbound telnet. I had the bright idea to load Samba with the EVFS mounting of remote drives, so that I could have eCS map to a Active Directory shares. I had moved the entire BBS data structure over from eCS to my physical W2k8 server drive/share. The nodes still ran on eCS, but mapped over to their data. I was having random crashes of eCS (JFS trap related crashes) when I had that setup. So, I spent part of my weekend moving everything back the way it was. All data is back physically on the eCS VM for the BBS. The other VM and my server map to the eCS VM. I do plan on using Samba for eCS (since the peer lan manager is not robust). There must be some type of problem with the EVFS mountpoint software and how it interacts with the JFS file system. Anyway, I spent way too much time this weekend getting the mess straightened out over here. I did test many new ideas, though. I tested DOSBOX - which did work great with my BBS software/doors, etc - but the modem emulation on telnet 23 didn't work totally correct. It would echo characters on just about everything on my BBS except for my editor. Not sure why. Also, there is no "Telnet Server" for DOSBOX that I'm aware of. I can't use a Fossil based setup, since WWIV doesn't use Fossil (except for some doors). I also tested NetSerial. Worked GREAT - but my BBS hates Windows XP. All programs that "shrink" before running (basically all external programs, editors, etc) all crash the XP DOS window. So, long story short, my plan is to stick with eComstation for the BBS nodes, enhance their networking ability, and run the other programs on my XP VM. I'm using a program called AutoMate to monitor when mail comes in and kick off my mailtossing batch file. Works fantastic. All data resides once again on my eCS JFS formatted drive, which is shared. Hope that explains it better. - Mark --- WWIVToss v.1.40 Registered* Origin: http://www.weather-station.org * Bel Air, MD -USA (1:261/1304.0) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/267 640/954 712/0 313 550 620 848 @PATH: 261/1304 266/512 140/1 261/38 712/848 633/267 |
