EV>Howdy! Tom,

EV>Yes, the rhythm pattern of those old Step By Step Ratchet Relays was
EV>something that either You liked or it would drive You crazy(ier?).

EV>The Teletype Machines I was around in the Navy had a musical pattern
EV>too, didn't they?
EV>Or didn't they use 'em on on the Sub that You were stationed on?

Submarines in my dad did have Teletype machines. Never spent enough time
in the radio shack to think of them much more then a very noisy machine.
Kinda like a the old Type setting machine used by newspapers.

EV>The Exchange where I visited my friend had Crossbar equipment in it.

While in bigger coties they did have crossbar but up in montana al they
had was the stroger Switches in the bigger cities and the small towns
stil had manual plug boards.

EV>Now that the Telephone Company uses ESS (Electronic Switching System)
EV>computers I would guess there wouldn't be any noise hardly at all.

True. Even the later crossbar equipment used Solid State Switches.

EV>I know Ma Bell was glad when he retired.

I had inteernded to go back to the Telephone company after my "Forded by
the Draft Baord Military service but in 1955 the year I was to get out I
got a chance to get into the Navy's Nuclear Submarine program so stayed
in the Navy. In hind sight was about the smartest decision I ever made.
