Well, actually...  all you have to do is try to compile configuration
changes from the options menu without first running cftn main.ftn and you
get a revealing message containing the string
"D:\darin\fte\fte\config\main.fte".

A not too subtle clue ;-)

Anyway...  I ran cfte config/main.fte and copied fte_new.cnf to fte.cnf
(replacing the original fte.cnf) but I am unable to successfully recompile
my configuration from the options menu.  It looks like a syntax error  ?? 
any idea what I need to do?  I'm working on Windows 2000.
