Dual Recovery Anonymous? Well It is a program for people who are being
treated for psychiatric and/or emotional health problems as well as
chemical dependency or substance abuse of some kind - including food
addictions for example.
The Dual Recovery Central Service Office (national) is at P O Box 8107
Prairie Village KS 66208. The phone no. there is 913-676-7226.
In Canada the address is Dual Recovery Anonymous - Canada, 294 St.
Vincent St. Barre, Ontario, L4M 4A1 and the phone no. there is
703-772-6443. I'm sorry that I don't have the Long Distance
International code for the canada number, but I am putting it up
primarily if you're in Canada. Otherwise I assume you'd call the U S
number, if you were telephoning.
The Book The Dual Disorders Recovery Book - sort of like their Big Book
I guess - was ten dollars when my friend bought this copy.
(Fortunately for you, I haven't returned it) She got this from
Hazelden Educational Materials. This company has other books available
for Dual Diagnosis folks and their families. THese include the DRA
step book - I'm not sure of it's title - a book on RELAPSE PREVENTION,
one on COPING WITH DUAL DISORDERS, and one which is A FAMILY GUIDE TO
COPING WITH DUAL DISORDERS. These last three books are NOT Dual
Recovery Anonymous books, but are by professionals. The step book is
from D. R. A. - unfortunately I don't remember the step books title.
However you can get a free Hazelden Catalogue by calling
1-800-328-9000.
Fortunately for you I still had the DUAL DISORDERS RECOVERY BOOK, which
my sponsee loaned me as this is where I found all this information.
(That book was pretty fascinating, let me tell you)
I don't have a local listing for Virginia for you, which is where I
assume you may be from as that is what this message was labelled with
as an origin line - a Virginia BBS.
I hope this is helpful to you.
By the way, I used to live in Roanoke VA myself - for about a year. I
went to meetings in that area for both AA and Al-anon. I really
enjoyed the meetings in that area - Virginia, MD, and D C. I miss
them a LOT.
also I think you should know I am dually diagnosed - I have
Cyclothymia, a bipolar effective disorder, as well as being a
recovering alcoholic, addict, codependent, incest survivor and a
not-so-recovering compulsive overeater. However I did this in AA and
Al-Anon and, more recently, Survivors of Incest Anonymous. I am not in
D R A myself, although I've been asked to speak at the group's one year
anniversary. However, after reading this book, I may start going
there.
I also have a little over 8 years sober and clean.
But definitely do not consider me an expert on D R A - I'm not.
One really nice thing about the book THE DUAL DISORDERS RECOVERY BOOK
is that there is a section in the back - about five pages long - on
starting a meeting, format, etc. My sponsee got this group I will be
speaking at organized on her own, with only about 6-8 mos. clean and
sober at the time - in AA and NA.
If you've had any experience in other 12 step programs, that, combined
with the instructions in the back of the DUAL DISORDERS book, should
make it possible to start your own meetings.
And a guy I know up here with forty something years sober once told me
that the way early AA spread was by new groups beinf formed - usually
people who had two things: a resentment and a coffeepot.
Anyway, founding and participating in this group seems to have been of
immense benefit to my sponsee.
I do hope this helps. You didn't say why you wanted the information,
so I gave you everything I had hoping to be as complete as possible, so
that you'd find what you need.
