I mean trying to keep as much of the physics book as possible, my First
Rule of Fantasy.  So you don't gratuitously break known laws of physics.
 I lean heavily on the idea of a society that works.  When possible I
show it working.  Starfleet does not exist in a vacuum.  Indeed I think
that if you don't occasionally show civilians in a non crisis situation you
could well get the impression that civilians exist to be in crisis
situations.  I respect the Starfleet chain of command and don't show them
as stupid blockheads 90% of the time that require Starship Captains to
break the rules or disobey orders to do the good thing.  After all those
Admirals were once Starship Captains themselves.  When did their brains
fall out?

By realistic I mean respect the physics book and respect the basic
competence of NPC characters.
