That's true when you're CB'ing, but I thought we were talking
about using it with a scanner? When you have a scanner in your car
you don't always want to attract any attention (depending on what state
you're in, I guess);)!

Well, the base I have is just the base for a CB whip so I'm not
loosing out too much there but I'd rather not frag it for nothing,
nonetheless. Was hoping that since I mentioned taking the RS
mag-mount apart and putting it on another base that someone else
might have experience doing this sort of thing. Maybe throw some
ideas my way but I guess no one's done that around here. Probably
should just buy a new one but the rest of the antenna's in fine shape.
