Hello Bill -

BB> Hi Charles, Can I pick your brains?

Sounds inviting but um ... NO!

BB> I just changed the old desktop for a mini-tower with XP.

I feel your pain.

BB> As it( XP) came out of the packet FrontDoor ran after a
BB> fashion, but after downloading all the updates, including
BB> ActiveX 9, there was suddenly no way to access or "open"
BB> the comms port. This meant that nothing would run.

fwiw W2K seems to be more 'agreeable' with older software than
XP would be.

I've never used FrontDoor and am not certain what ActiveX is
used for. I've not been into the 'visual' languages at all but
I notice ActiveX being mentioned for VB and as a security risk.
:-)

BB> This is the very elderly decrepit MSDOS 6.2 and Win 3.1
BB> machine that has been in storage for a couple of years, as
BB> an explanation of how I can use the mailer at all now.

The 'elderly decrepit' machine I do understand. Have one
sitting to my left.

BB> I also found MSC version 7.00 on it and it appears to work.
BB> :-)

Good.

BB> The question is - has anybody (including you in particular)
BB> managed to get a FidoNet mailer working on the latest
BB> version of XP?

I've never been a 'point' nor have I installed or configured a
FIDO BBS echomail system. I guess I'd have to say 'NO'.

Based on my reading of other people's experiences with XP I
would suggest that you revert back to what you had or do a
complete reinstall of XP and install only the updates that you
are certain you need and one at a time rather than all at once.
