subject: Need modem expert!

I have a long-term, continual problem that I've been unable to solve, and I
Would Appreciate Your Help!
I am unable to establish a reliable connection to a particular local BBS that
I call a lot. This is a one phone line board using a 28800 USR modem with the
speed locked at 57600.
Various strange things happen, when I connect! Most of my calls are CONNECT
14400/ARQ/V32/LAPM/V42BIS CONNECT 57600 Date and Time (Error Correcting Modem
Detected)
Often, everything goes normally thru log-on, both manual and script, intro
and notice screens to the main screen command line. But, when I try to d/l a
QWK packet, or a zip file, this is what happens:
1. Sometimes the d/l starts normally-blocks transferring smoothly and cps
increasing steadily-then suddenly with no warning, no errors indicated and
nothing unusual on the Status line, the transfer stops for a few seconds! It
then resumes at a much lower cps with cps again increasing, stops, resumes at
a lower cps, etc., until I'm disconnected.
2. Sometimes the d/l starts at the usual 11xx cps, halts immediately and
disconnects. Sometimes it starts at 3xx cps and never builds above 13xx cps.
3. Sometimes right from the beginning of the connection the screen will write
a line of text, stop, write another line or two of text, stop, and it
continues this all the way to the main screen. This continues with everything
I do from that point on-even if I'm not d/l-until somewhere along the line it
disconnects.
Sometimes when I call the connection is at 12000 baud, so I just hang up.
Experience has taught me that it's a waste of time to continue with this
connection.
I have a Hayes compatible 14400 fax/voice/modem with the fax disabled in
QModem. All of the diagnostic programs that I've run on it (MSD, System
Analyst, Dr. Modem, ComSet, etc.) state that I have a 16550AFN UART. I'm
running QModemPro for Windows (not Win95 ver.), under Windows 95, which shows
No Conflicts for either the port, or the modem, in the Device Manager. I
don't run other programs, when I use the modem, and I don't use a screen
saver.
My basic settings are: Com1, IRQ4, DTE locked at 57600 presently (I've tried
all the speeds from 19xxx-115xxx with the same results.), 8N1, hardware flow
control (CTS/RTS) enabled, ANSI emulation, using the Zmodem-CRC32 protocol.
Can you help me solve this problem? I've been fiddling around with it for
over a month without success!
Bob
