Possibly in this case the "average, or below-average Joe Schmoe"
wasn't "flying around in fighters in *any* service branch" but
was instead humping a pack through a load of mud in a hot climate with
hostile people firing at him?

Any Joe Schmoe can do that. You've got to be distinctly above average to
get to fly 102'es for the Texas National Guard.
