I suppose the quality and speed of your connect will also depend on the
lines in the area you're calling. Of course, good luck if your call happens
to be pushed down a cable half eaten by s shark. :-)

Of course. I forgot that V.34(+) allows fallback to 2400. Even so, I
managed to connect at 14400 once to Canada, but (if my memory serves me
correctly) the EC failed. In my opinion, dumping off a few messages at 2400
bps (with EC on) is a better move than a lousy 14400 connect which takes
seemingly forever to negotiate.
