However, the defining characteristic of scientists is that they believe things because they have a REASON to believe them (note that "because it's in a book" is NOT a reason). The advances of medicine and technology are offsprings from science. With that background, you could excuse a scientist who felt they had a reason to look for the cause of things, because every time that science has looked for a cause, it has been found. It doesn't require "faith" to believe that it is worthwhile to continue looking for reasons.
