Nice one girl. knew you'd fall for it. So here
it is:
With the establishment of the chiefdoms and then
the city state of Sumer, there arose a
managerial class of people who were also the
ritual leaders. (Rohrlich does not use the term
chiefdom but I think it is implied in her
description of the different levels of political
organization.) This class of chiefly priests
retained a large amount of the surplus wealth
produced in the city and increasingly
appropriated the labor and land of farmers, who
lost autonomy as the priesthood became detached
from the interests of the community. The kin
corporate egalitarian clan structures of land
ownership were thus eroded and clan chiefs
became incorporated into the ruling elite. In
early Sumer, women ruled as queens; they were
priests and managers, scribes, musicians,
craftsworkers, healers, warriors, and deities.
They owned land and they ran businesses.
"Evidently, as the need for more land, natural
resources, commodities, and luxury items
increased, warring became a paramount activity,
and generals became the rulers separate from the
priesthood. The priesthood, however, retained
elite status and important ritual and
ideological roles. With increasing militarism in
the third millennium B.C., class stratifications
became more extreme, especially with the
institution of slavery. The earliest slaves were
women who had been captured in war and also
wives who were sold to pay off debts. Women
slaves were used for breeding, labor, and
prostitution.
"It is Rohrlich’s thesis that in the context of
chronic warfare, which became a male occupation,
rigid economic stratification, and political
consolidation in the hands of a male ruling
class, kinship relationships were subverted and
women became subordinate. She considers the
subjugation of women to have been an integral
part of these interacting processes that
resulted in state formation in Sumer."
(Bleier. R., (1984) *Science and Gender* London.
Pergaman [pp. 153-154.])
Bottom line girl, you lot GREEDY as usual and
then expected us to do your dirty work. Here we
are talking about 4,000 years ago. This,
according to Rohrlich's thesis, is when and how
men rose to dominance from a position in which
the wimmin were the rulers.
Eat yer art out DEAR!
