I know little about Mandrake, though my brother runs it. It seems to do a
good job at dealing with all sorts of installation issues, from what I
hear.

I run Slackware here, and counting what shows up in KDE, there are a
whole *mess* of editors. Which one you'd consider to be a good
"programming editor" I'm not going to guess at. Being used to
using qedit under dos, I generally stick with mcedit (comes as a part of
the mc package) and that's good enough for what little I do -- even though
it includes such niceties as syntax highlighting and showing matching
parentheses/braces/brackets, etc.

Never got into either vi (or any of its clones, which appear to be
installed here) or emacs. Yet, anyhow.
