Hello, Kevin,
My suggestion would be glass tiles on a tool made of regular cement. Both
the materials are easily available, and cheaper than porcelain tiles and
dental stone.
I am currently completing my hogging out of a 3/4 " thick 10"
blank on a cement tool. On top of the cement are glass tiles cut from
another circular glass plate, which was 1/4" thick, and 9" in
diameter. The tiles are reassembled and epoxied on to the cement in the
same order so as to cover the whole face of the tool. Due to this, adjacent
tiles are separated by channels, and the tiles on the edges are aligned
with and follow the circular edge of the cement perfectly. The gaps between
tiles were filled with wax, by putting a candle in contact with the tip of
a soldering rod and running the rod slowly down the channels.
The initial hole in the blank was made with a plumbing pipe capped with a
small flange.
Pictures will be up on my web site "real soon, now".
Sincerely,
Kartik Patel,
