-=> Quoting Jonathan Guy to Andy Ulrich <=-
AU> I was asked politely so I did. If it had been an order,
AU> that would have been
AU> a different story. If there is no law against it they
AU> can't tell you to turn
JG> That may not be correct, there is a little thing called Officer
JG> Safety. Bear in mind, especially out of state that the officer doesn't
JG> know you from John Q. Turd and doesn't know how you'll react to things.
JG> For that matter, he doesn't know if it is your car and your scanner, a
JG> local thug could've car-jacked you and is now driving around with your
JG> car and scanner...
JG> I said all that to say this :)
Yes but at the time he had my drivers license in hand with the proper picture
and my pager was right beside my scanner all my fire department stickers were
clearly visable. He knew exactly who I was before he asked me to turn off the
scanner.
I have a theory about the whole situation. We ie: the fire
department have had power plays with the Highway Patrol in the past, in fact
a big stink put a few patrol men in hot water with their supervisors arising
from a Trooper telling the fire department to clear the fire equipment from
the road to let traffic pass which was backed up. This in conjunction with
another trooper yelling at our Chief and asking him "Who the hell are you
and what are you doing here" even though he didn't have his bunker gear on,
he did have a radio in hand and was giving orders to all the fire personel at
the scene. Quite frankly a no bainer! All this while we were trying to
extricate a badly injured victim of a car wreck. Another fatal car wreck they
refused to call for a wrecker to move a car that had ended up against a house
and was leaking gas. When we had asked County 911 dispatch were the wrecker
was they advised that Troopers had refused to call for one, saying that the
car was not near the structure and not leaking gas. The fact was the car was
within 4ft. of the house and was leaking gas all over the place.
Now I know that emotions can run high at emergency situations but there is no
call for that type of behavior.
JG> If he runs the car for stolen, he doesn't want you to be sitting
JG> behind the wheel and here "Vehicle was taken in an armed robbery about
JG> 2 hours ago 100 miles down the road..."
As far as this situation I was in my own township with my sticker that all
Ohio vehicles have on the plates stating the county of residence.
JG> See what I'm saying? Fortunately you were nice to him, and from
JG> what you've said, he had a good attitude with you...everybody drove
JG> away and nobody rode away in a backseat.... :)
You are quite correct about this. Being cooperative most definately got me
out of a speeding ticket.
The Officer safety thing can be abused, that could cover just about anything
they wanted to do or have you do. I just wish he had put some more brain
power and training to use in the situation, it just left a bad taste in my
mouth.
... DOS never says "EXCELLENT command or filename"...
