I've heard it described as being very similar to losing a leg by some
parents, but the ones saying that, like me, still had both legs. So I'm
not sure ....

Not all Native Americans were that kind. I think of the Carribs who
were happily killing and eating the Tainos at one point, and stealing
their islands. Which didn't last very long, however, before the
Spaniards came, and killed the CArribs, and stole the islands, too.
