In Australia (like many places), society is becoming more and more dependent on imported manufactured goods, and young people are less and less inclined to learn any technology-based skill because such skills are no longer valued. So long as we can cheaply buy replacement technology, we don't need to understand anything apart from how to sign the contract. Who knows how this trend will affect society in a couple of generations? Similarly, I suppose the Creationists are going to drive young people away from science -- it just won't be valued. I suppose it doesn't matter so long as the Apocalypse occurs soon.
