Subject: Tomatoes
KN>Our patio tomato leaves are turning yellow. We only get west sun
KN>as that is way our apartment faces. Why? Also we had one green
KN>tomato that turned rotten on bottom of it and fell off. What
KN>could cause this problem? We have all kinds of green tomatoes on
KN>both plants. This is our first year raising patio tomatoes.
Maybe both are symptoms of the same thing. Blossom end rot can be
caused by a simultaneous deficiency of calcium and fluctuating
moisture supplies. Crushing some eggshells and adding to the soil (or
giving a limestone drink) may help with the former. Either be a
fanatic about watering often enough to keep the soil slightly moist at
all times, or put a mulch in the pot over the soil. Even big stones
would help slow down the water loss, and keep the plant from getting
undue water stress. Keep out of really windy areas.
KN>What other veggie's do people raise on patio's? Next year we want
KN>to raise more vegetable's.
You name it, determined gardeners grow it in pots. :-)
Herbs are good, scallions come quickly, freeing the pot for different
plantings. Peppers do OK, depending strongly on constant moisture
levels to do well. Lettuce, mesclun and other greens do well...
